Contact Lens Exam Denver

When you wear contact lenses, it’s important to schedule annual eye exams to maintain the health of your eyes. A contact lens exam is different than your comprehensive eye exam. However, you can schedule both exams at the same time.

Over time, your eyesight can change. This means your contact lens prescription also changes. During your contact lens exam, we check your eyes to ensure your current prescription still meets your needs. Also, we discuss new lens options available that may work better for you.

If you haven’t worn contact lenses before, a contact lens exam provides valuable information, like the size of the surface of your eye, to help the eye doctor recommend the best contacts for your eyes.

Whether you want contact lenses for the first time or need to renew your prescription, you need a contact lens exam.

Contact Lens Fitting

The goal of a contact lens fitting is to find the best lenses for your eyes. The tests for the contact lens fitting are in addition to the procedures and tests of a regular eye exam

Tests Specific to a Contact Lens Exam:

  • Corneal Measurement – The curvature of the cornea matters when choosing the right contact lenses. The eye doctor uses both a keratometer and a corneal topographer to measure the curve and evaluate the surface of the cornea. For patients with astigmatism, a toric lens works best.

  • Pupil and Iris Evaluation – The eye doctor measures the size of the pupil or iris depending on the type of lenses you desire. The eye doctor uses a biomicroscope or slit lamp to determine the measurement.

  • Tear Film EvaluationContact lenses require moisture in the eyes. If you have dry eye syndrome, you have a higher risk for complications with contact lenses. The eye doctor performs a test by putting drops in the eyes and measuring the volume of tears to determine if the patient has the right amount of moisture to successfully wear contact lenses.

As part of the contact lens fitting, the eye doctor provides a trial pair of contacts. The patient wears the contacts to see if the selected type works well. If so, the patient receives a prescription for the contacts.
