What is Orthokeratology?
Orthokeratology, also referred to as ortho-k or corneal reshaping, uses special contact lenses to reshape the cornea. The benefit of orthokeratology is to reduce myopia, which is nearsightedness.
With this treatment option, the patient wears gas permeable contact lenses overnight. Ortho-k treatment is comparable to orthodontics work. The process works if the patient continues with treatment. If the patient wears the lenses on a consistent basis, the results continue.
However, over time the patient’s nearsightedness will return when the patient stops wearing the lenses. Orthokeratology works quickly. Some patients see results in as little as a few days. Other patients take up to two weeks to achieve results.
Thankfully, there is no limit on duration for orthokeratology lens wear. In fact, many patients wear ortho-k lenses nightly for years. If your eyes remain healthy and you continue with regular vision checkups, ortho-k lenses provide an ongoing solution for nearsightedness.
Who is a Good Candidate for Orthokeratology?
Orthokeratology offers a surgery free alternative to vision correction. Adults with nearsightedness have the option to wear eyeglasses or contact lenses to correct vision issues. Also, adults have the option to undergo LASIK eye surgery. Ortho-k is simply another correction option for nearsightedness.
Ortho-k therapy offers a solution for patients to not have to wear eyeglasses or contact lenses all the time. Instead, the patient wears the lenses at night while they sleep instead of during waking hours.
For children, orthokeratology works as an alternative to eyeglasses. Because vision usually continues to worsen during childhood development, doctors do not offer LASIK for children.
Are Corneal Reshaping Lenses Right for You?
Schedule an eye appointment to determine if orthokeratology therapy is right for you. Not every person is a good candidate for corneal reshaping lenses. We work with the patient to determine if orthokeratology makes sense for you.
Our goal is always to provide quality care for our patients. We will provide the best possible information for you to make an informed decision for you or your child. However, in our experience, orthokeratology offers an effective option to address nearsightedness in patients across ages.
The cost for orthokeratology varies based on the type and degree of the refractive error. The basic cost usually starts at around $1500. In addition, insurance companies most often view the ortho-k lenses price as elective.
However, we work with each patient to provide an accurate cost estimate to help you make an informed care decision. Our goal is always open and honest patient communication and care.
